A yet-to-be-identified disease has reportedly claimed the lives of five students at Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero (KSUSTA), leaving the university community in shock and fear.
According to anonymous student sources, four students died last week under unclear circumstances, while a fifth student, who fell seriously ill overnight, tragically passed away earlier today.
The situation gained more attention after officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) visited the university last week for an awareness campaign on meningitis. However, it remains unconfirmed whether the students’ deaths were related to the disease.
The university’s registrar, Maimaru Alhaji Tilli, confirmed the deaths of four students but admitted the cause remains unknown.
“Yes, we’ve recorded four deaths, but the cause is still undetermined. We acknowledge the need to decongest student hostels urgently,” Tilli stated.
He added that the university has formally reached out to the Ministry of Higher Education, led by Commissioner Alhaji Isah Abubakar Tunga, seeking guidance on preventing more deaths.
“We have requested permission to temporarily close the university, but we are still waiting for a response,” he revealed.
The Students’ Union Government (SUG) has also appealed to the university management, urging an immediate shutdown to protect students from the unexplained illness.
As of now, no official diagnosis has been established, leaving students and staff on edge while authorities investigate the source of the outbreak.
