Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has applauded the Department of State Services (DSS) following a successful operation that led to the arrest of five high-profile kidnappers hiding within the state’s dense forests.
The arrests, carried out on Wednesday, March 12, were the result of an intelligence-led mission that pinpointed the suspects at two separate hideouts. The apprehended individuals are believed to be key members of a notorious gang responsible for a string of kidnappings across Udi Local Government Area and other parts of Enugu State.
Authorities revealed that the suspects confessed to collecting hefty ransoms from their victims' families. During the raid, security operatives recovered a significant sum of cash, suspected to be ransom money, alongside an assortment of dangerous weapons and other incriminating items.
Governor Mbah, in a statement, praised the DSS and acknowledged the vital role played by other security forces, including the military, police, and the Enugu State Forest Guards. He reassured residents that efforts are ongoing to track down remaining gang members and permanently dismantle criminal networks operating from the state’s forests.
In a related breakthrough, three additional members of a separate kidnapping syndicate were arrested on Friday, March 14, further intensifying the state’s crackdown on criminal activities.
Governor Mbah reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring Enugu remains a safe and secure environment for all.
