The Kaduna State House of Assembly has announced plans to take legal action against former Governor, Nasir El-Rufa’i for allegedly calling its members “stark illiterates.”
The lawmakers described El-Rufai’s comments as defamatory and insisted that they met the constitutional requirements to hold office.
Henry Marah, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, stated that the former governor’s remarks showed ignorance of constitutional provisions, particularly those that set eligibility criteria for election into the Assembly and those that empower the legislature to conduct investigations.
El-Rufa’i had alleged on Freedom Radio that the Assembly lacked the capacity to probe his administration and that the report of the ad hoc committee investigating his government was written by an outsider.
In response, Marah dismissed these claims, stating that the investigation was part of the Assembly’s constitutional responsibility.
He added that El-Rufai remains indicted unless he successfully challenges the committee’s findings in court, emphasizing that all findings are publicly available.
Marah also clarified that the Speaker, Yusuf Dahiru, had no authority to fire or hire the former Executive Chairman of the Kaduna Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS), Abubakar Zaid, contrary to claims made by El-Rufa’i.
The former governor made his comments during a Freedom Radio discussion program on Monday.
