The Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a man, Mamman Shettima Baba, alongside his wife, for assaulting a young schoolgirl who picked mangoes from a compound in Pompomari Housing Estate, Maiduguri.
The arrest, carried out on Friday, March 21, 2025, followed a viral video showing Shettima Baba viciously beating the child with a thick stick, while his wife recorded the incident and urged him to "beat her more."
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the girl, accompanied by friends, noticed an open gate with a mango tree inside while returning from school. Acting out of youthful curiosity, they entered the compound to pluck mangoes.
However, Almajiri children in the area caught one of the girls and handed her over to the residents — Shettima Baba and his wife — who then subjected her to a brutal beating.
NSCDC Commandant Abdulrazaq Haroon confirmed the arrest, stating that during interrogation, Baba admitted to the assault. He claimed his actions were fueled by frustration, alleging that students frequently trespassed to steal mangoes from his tree.
The disturbing video has sparked widespread condemnation from child rights activists, legal experts, and government officials, all demanding justice for the young victim.
Borno State Commissioner of Education, Lawan Abbah Wakilbe, visited the NSCDC Command, commending officers for their swift action. He assured the public that the state government, alongside the Commissioner of Justice, would ensure the case is thoroughly prosecuted to serve as a deterrent.
“This level of cruelty towards a child is unacceptable. We will pursue justice to the fullest extent,” Wakilbe stated.
The case has reignited discussions on child protection laws and the urgent need for public awareness against violence towards minors.
