Massive protests erupted across Rivers State as women marched in defiant support of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, demanding his immediate reinstatement. This comes just days after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the troubled state.
Videos circulating on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, show scores of women holding placards and chanting slogans in solidarity with the embattled governor. The protesters voiced strong opposition to the federal intervention that saw Fubara and his deputy ousted from office.
Governor Fubara was suspended on March 18, 2025, following rising political tensions that reportedly crippled governance and threatened national stability. Citing Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution, President Tinubu invoked emergency powers, dissolving the state’s leadership and appointing retired Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas as sole administrator.
The move effectively removed not only Fubara and his deputy but also the entire state legislature — a decision that has sharply divided public opinion.
While supporters argue the drastic action was necessary to restore order, critics accuse the federal government of undermining democracy in the oil-rich state.
Protesters, mainly women, insist the governor’s removal was unjust and politically motivated. "We voted for Fubara, not an administrator. Bring him back!" one demonstrator shouted.
As tensions mount, the streets of Rivers remain charged with anger and uncertainty, leaving the state at the center of a growing national debate on democracy, governance, and federal power.
