A suspected electricity vandal was discovered dead near a transformer belonging to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) in the Ikot Ibiok area of Eket, Akwa Ibom State.
The incident, which occurred around 3 a.m. on Wednesday, March 19, was confirmed by PHEDC’s Regional Manager, Mr. Anthony Etim, during a briefing with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday.
Etim revealed that the lifeless body of the suspect was found beside the tampered transformer located on Party House Road. Residents who gathered at the scene identified the deceased as a man from the Mkpok area of Eket.
Police operatives later evacuated the body. Etim lamented the frequent vandalism plaguing the area, noting that such acts had left many customers without electricity.
"Vandalism happens almost daily. This time, the suspect met his end in the act," Etim stated. He urged community members to remain vigilant and protect public infrastructure from criminals.
"We’ve consistently advised residents to safeguard electricity installations. It’s clear from this incident that these vandals are often locals, not outsiders. This suspect was identified as someone from the community, proving that the culprits live among us," he added.
Etim further clarified that the deceased had no ties to PHEDC staff, dismissing any speculation of insider involvement. While he couldn’t provide an exact count of vandalism cases in the area, he confirmed the problem remains widespread.
He appealed to customers and community leaders to intensify efforts in securing power facilities, stressing that uninterrupted electricity depends on collective vigilance against vandalism.
