The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two individuals suspected of involvement in cult activities and a string of armed robberies targeting residents in Awka.
Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the arrests, explaining that they followed numerous complaints about phone snatchings and robberies along the bustling Club Street, also known as Abakaliki Street.
Responding to the rising incidents, Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu ordered an immediate crackdown. Acting on the directive, officers from the Special Anti-Cult Unit in Enugwu Ukwu carried out an early morning raid on March 18, 2025, resulting in the arrest of 22-year-old Chibuike Ozoekwem and 19-year-old Favour Patrick.
The suspects were apprehended in an unfinished building on Onwurah Street, Awka. During the operation, police recovered a pump-action gun, 16 spent cartridges, a battle axe, and two phones believed to have been stolen.
One victim, who was reportedly robbed at gunpoint by a group of four men on March 13, identified one of the recovered phones as hers.
Ikenga noted that investigations are ongoing to track down other members of the gang, assuring that all suspects will face prosecution once inquiries are concluded.
"The command remains committed to ensuring the safety of all residents and will not relent in the fight against cultism and armed robbery," Ikenga added.
