A frustrated Lagos resident has sparked an online debate after publicly criticizing supermarkets for charging customers extra fees for nylon bags.
In a viral video circulating on social media, the man, shopping at a supermarket in the Isheri area of Lagos, voiced his outrage after being asked to pay ₦30 for a nylon bag to carry items worth ₦11,000.
Visibly upset, he confronted the store’s staff, questioning the fairness of the charge. In a follow-up video, he extended his criticism, suggesting that if supermarkets continue with this practice, market traders, chemists, and other businesses might adopt similar fees, burdening everyday shoppers.
*“This is how illegalities start in Nigeria,”* he fumed, comparing the trend to the real estate sector, where he claimed agents initially introduced small charges that have now ballooned into exorbitant fees for house hunters.
The man warned that if left unchecked, supermarkets could soon escalate bag prices to as high as ₦200, further exploiting customers.
His outburst has since ignited mixed reactions online, with some supporting his stance and others defending the environmental push to reduce plastic waste by discouraging free nylon bags.
