The number of New Nigerian Newspaper (NNN) retirees who died waiting for their unpaid entitlements has climbed to 108 following the death of Yahaya Z. Bako, a former staff member in the Marketing Department, over the weekend.
Bako’s death was confirmed in a message shared on the NNN Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) beneficiaries' WhatsApp platform by Alhaji Idris. “We lost another beneficiary in person of Yahaya Z Bako of the Marketing Department. He died today, March 22, 2025,” the message read.
His passing comes just 12 days after the death of another retiree, Mr. Zakka Bitiyong, from the Commercial Printing Department and Radio Room, who passed away on March 11, 2025, bringing the toll to 107 before Bako’s demise.
The latest death has thrown the community of unpaid retirees into mourning, with members expressing grief and frustration over the ongoing non-payment of entitlements.
“We, the entire NNN family, are bereaved of a nice gentleman — harmless and always ready to help. It’s heartbreaking to lose such a caring colleague without him enjoying the fruits of his labor after waiting in vain for so long,” one member wrote.
Another lamented, “God will surely handle those responsible for the delayed payment of the unpaid salaries, half-month salaries, and three-quarter salaries that Yahaya worked for since the early 2000s.”
Adding to the emotional toll, retirees are also rallying prayers for a critically ill colleague, Ado Umar, fondly known as Baba Ado, who recently underwent surgery for a hernia at Yusuf Dantsoho Memorial Hospital, Kaduna.
“Good morning members of this great forum,” another message read, “we are soliciting prayers for one of our former colleagues, a driver and beneficiary, Ado Umar (Baba Ado), who just underwent surgery.”
Investigations reveal that around 29 other retirees are battling severe illnesses or remain hospitalized while waiting for their payments.
Despite the Northern Governors Forum generating N7 billion from selling off New Nigerian Newspaper properties, the ex-staff members remain unpaid, with outstanding entitlements totaling N2.5 billion.
