Nigeria’s late ruler, Umaru Yar’Adua, to bribe several justices of the Supreme Court as the apex court deliberated on the validity of the 2007 presidential election.

Many local and international observers had adjudged the April 14 and 21 elections as one of the most fraudulent in history. Instead of defending the integrity of the electoral law and upholding the Nigerian constitution, some of the justices opted to subvert the cause of justice – after receiving and sharing the sum of $30 million.

The cash was provided by the Umaru Yar'Adua regime and channeled to the justices through then Minister of Justice, Michael Aondoakaa. As SaharaReporters disclosed, Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu was the conduit between Mr. Aondoakaa and other corrupt justices who fell for the bait.
justices who accepted the bribe are (then Chief Justice) Legbo Kutigi, current Chief Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, Justice Niki Tobi, and Justice Dahiru Musdapher.

Mr. Niki Tobi, who recently retired from the Supreme Court, is currently facing a dire health crisis. A source close to him disclosed that Justice Tobi’s dismal health was triggered by the shock he got when the Yar’Adua regime reneged on other parts of its pledge to the justice. “Chief Aondoakaa had promised that Justice Tobi’s son, Ebowei, would be elevated to the Court of Appeal and that the justice would be made Chief Justice. Those two parts of the deal were scuttled,” said the source, handing the justice a shock that shattered his health.

Systematic corruption, otherwise why should a plot of land (no matter where) in Nigeria cost 300ml naira(2ml US dollar) while over 80% of her citizen live below poverty line ie. less than 2 dollar per day?
