The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confiscated banned agrochemical products valued at more than N800 million during sweeping raids across four South-West states.
In a statement released on Friday, the agency confirmed that its operatives carried out coordinated inspections in Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo States, targeting outlets dealing in prohibited pesticides.
According to NAFDAC, the enforcement action, which spanned several days, led to the inspection of over 16 stores and the seizure of 551 cartons of hazardous chemicals. The confiscated products included pesticides containing Chlorpyrifos—banned as of November 1, 2024—Paraquat, prohibited since January 1, 2024, and Atrazine, which is slated for a ban by January 1, 2025.
“These substances are not only banned but are extremely dangerous to human health, capable of causing cancer, respiratory complications, and serious damage to vital organs such as the liver and kidneys,” the agency warned.
NAFDAC also stressed that the use of these harmful chemicals jeopardizes Nigeria’s agricultural trade relations, with several exported goods rejected internationally due to contamination by banned substances.
“In addition to endangering public health, the illegal circulation of these chemicals tarnishes Nigeria’s reputation in global markets,” the statement noted. “We encourage the use of safer, approved alternatives like Flushout, Sharpshooter, and Best.”
The agency urged farmers, traders, and consumers to be vigilant by verifying agrochemical products and reporting suspicious sales or distributors to the nearest NAFDAC office.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding public health, NAFDAC assured Nigerians that it would continue to strengthen its surveillance and enforcement operations to eliminate unsafe products from the market.
