Justice A. Isiaka of the Kaduna State High Court has sentenced Darlington Ogihonmwanghomwan to three years imprisonment after finding him guilty of defrauding an investor of N1.2 million under false pretenses.
Ogihonmwanghomwan’s conviction followed his prosecution by the Kaduna Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a one-count charge of cheating.
According to the EFCC, Ogihonmwanghomwan, while operating under the business name “Hale Bird Poultry Company,” deceitfully induced one Zainab Baloni to invest N1.2 million in a purported poultry and egg production scheme in December 2023. He had claimed that investors would receive a five percent return every two days, with flexible withdrawal options throughout the month.
The charge read:
Ogihonmwanghomwan pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him. Prosecution counsel M. U. Gadaka then urged the court to convict and sentence the defendant accordingly.
Delivering his ruling, Justice Isiaka sentenced the defendant to three years in prison, with an option of a N100,000 fine.
The EFCC stated that Ogihonmwanghomwan’s troubles began after Baloni petitioned the agency, alleging that the convict not only failed to deliver the promised returns but also refused to refund her investment despite several demands.
