National Drug Law Enforcement Agency officials at the departure hall were alerted when the scanning machine showed Okwuchukwu had inserted five wraps of cocaine weighing 170g, into his anus. The remaining wraps weighing 600g were concealed in the handle of his hand luggage.
The 38-year-old Okwuchukwu, who is married with two children, left Nigeria in 2008 for Congo Kinshasa. “I had no intention of dealing in drugs because of my religious orientation. I took to drug trafficking because of frustration. Congolese officials seized my goods worth $10,000 last year. That singular loss liquidated my business and marked the genesis of many problems in life. After my goods were seized, I found it difficult to feed,” Okwuchukwu recalled.
“I took the risk to earn some money and start my business again. Unfortunately, I was caught in the process. I was afraid of swallowing the drug, so they hid it inside my luggage handle. All the wraps could not enter into it, so I had to insert the remaining few wraps into my anus. This is my first time of smuggling drugs and I pray never to get involved in drug trafficking again in my life. My greatest worry is the welfare of my wife and two children who are in far away Congo. In my desire to ensure their welfare, I have plunged them into further crisis,” a remorseful Okwuchukwu lamented.
The NDLEA Airport Commander, Alhaji Hamza Umar, expressed concern on the increased rate of trafficking in methamphetamine. “Of recent, most of the seized drugs are methamphetamine. Previously, it was heroin and cannabis; but that is not the case anymore from the statistics of the past two months,” Hamza stated. He noted that concealing drugs in luggage handles was one of the latest techniques of drug trafficking at the Lagos airport. “Ingestion of methamphetamine, like cocaine, is the trend. Only recently, a 50-year-old male suspect, Offiah Vincent, who was arrested at the Lagos airport, died recently from methamphetamine ingestion,” Hamza added.
The chairman of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, however, assured Nigerians of the agency’s commitment to eliminating drug trafficking. Giade said, “The NDLEA has in the first two months of this year, arrested no fewer than 22 suspected drug traffickers at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos. Drug traffickers may try their best to traffic illicit drugs, but we shall continue to discharge our services conscientiously.” He said that Okwuchukwu would to be charged to court soon.
