₦921 Billion Worth of Contraband Seized at Apapa Port
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a massive consignment of illegal goods valued at over **₦921 billion** at the **Apapa Ports** in Lagos, in what officials have described as one of the largest anti-smuggling operations in recent history.
The seizures, announced on Wednesday by the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, include unregistered sex-enhancement drugs, expired food products, and advanced drone technology, many of which were imported without regulatory approvals or falsely declared.
Briefing journalists in Lagos, Adeniyi revealed that the bust involved five 40-foot containers, two 20-foot containers, and four additional seizures containing illicit goods disguised under false declarations.
“These items pose a serious threat to national health and security. The total duty-paid value stands at ₦921 billion,” the Customs boss said.
Alarming Details of the Seizure
According to Adeniyi, five of the containers were stocked with **unregistered segxwal performance drugs**, described as hazardous and potentially fatal when used without medical supervision.
One container held 89 cartons of unregistered pharmaceutical drugs, another carried 242 cartons, while a third was loaded with over 1,000 packages of hydra-sildenafil citrate tablets—a drug used for erectile dysfunction, but lacking NAFDAC certification.
Another 40-foot container was packed with over 1,400 packages of dubious tablets labeled “Chest and Lungs Beta Plus Big Booty Tablets,” also not approved by health authorities. A fifth was falsely declared as cosmetic powder, but actually contained 805 packages of unapproved drugs.
Expired Margarine and Military Drones Also Intercepted
The Customs chief also highlighted the interception of two 20-foot containers filled with expired margarine, as well as 60 units of ‘warrior’ drones and 53 helicopter drones, all lacking End User Certificates—a mandatory clearance from the Office of the National Security Adviser for such imports.
Additionally, 10 units of professional walkie-talkies were seized, flagged for similar documentation infractions.
“We are seeing a shift from isolated smuggling cases to highly organised criminal networks using sophisticated concealment methods,” Adeniyi warned.
He noted that some of the pharmaceuticals were **deliberately misclassified** as skincare products to bypass inspections.
Dangerous Trends and Health Warnings
Adeniyi decried the surge in importation of unregulated segxwal enhancement drugs, noting the serious public health implications such as cardiovascular risks and dangerous drug interactions.
He categorized the intercepted goods into three high-risk groups:
1. Unregistered pharmaceuticals (73.7% of the haul)
2. Expired food items
3. Controlled equipment including drones and telecommunication devices
“These categories clearly violate the NAFDAC Act and various national security protocols,” he said, emphasizing the need for tighter border controls and multi-agency collaboration.
The Customs Service says it is already working with NAFDAC, the NSA’s office, and other regulatory bodies to trace the origins of the shipments and ensure prosecution of those behind the imports.
“This operation sends a strong message: Nigeria will not be a dumping ground for dangerous and illegal imports,” Adeniyi concluded.
