There was widespread panic in the Idimu area of Alimosho Local Government, Lagos State, on Wednesday morning when a minibus transporting a corpse for burial lost control and rammed into another vehicle in a funeral convoy, leaving several mourners injured.
The accident, which occurred around 10 a.m. near the busy Idimu bus stop, involved a convoy of three commercial minibuses and a Toyota Space Bus heading from Ejigbo to Ikotun for a burial ceremony. Eyewitnesses reported that the lead vehicle, carrying the deceased, suffered sudden brake failure, causing the driver to veer off course and collide with another bus in the procession.
At least five people—three women and two men—sustained varying degrees of injuries, with some reportedly thrown from the vehicles on impact.
“The whole place turned chaotic,” said an eyewitness who identified herself as Foluke. “People were screaming and trying to help those trapped. It was only after the crash that we noticed a coffin inside one of the buses. That’s when we realised it was a funeral convoy.”
According to one of the drivers, the affected bus had experienced mechanical trouble earlier in the journey but resumed the trip after a temporary fix. “The bus started moving slowly at first, but then it picked up again. As we got to Idimu, the brakes just stopped working. I tried everything, but the bus wouldn’t stop,” the visibly shaken driver recounted.
Following the impact, concerned bystanders rushed to the scene to assist the injured. A female passenger nursing a leg injury was seen clutching the casket inside the damaged vehicle, refusing to let go.
A nearby food vendor, who witnessed the incident, revealed that some victims had broken limbs. “Three people had their legs trapped in the bus seats. One of them was even flung out of the vehicle while trying to board,” she said.
Meanwhile, the rest of the funeral convoy had unknowingly continued the journey, only realising something was wrong when they reached the Council area and noticed the hearse was missing. One mourner said they turned back immediately after receiving a distress call.
Emergency assistance from residents helped extract victims, who were later taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The corpse was carefully transferred into another vehicle to continue the burial rites.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the incident, but residents have called for improved vehicle inspections, especially for commercial transport used for sensitive duties like burials.
