According to official figures, the government currently owes over N4 trillion to the Gencos in unpaid subsidy-related debts.

A recent report by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) showed that in February 2025, the actual cost of power generation stood at N116.18 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), while consumers paid an average of N88.21/kWh. This left a subsidy shortfall of N27.97/kWh borne by the government.

Currently, only 15% of Nigerian electricity consumers, classified under Band A, pay unsubsidized rates, while the remaining 85% continue to receive government-supported electricity pricing.

Adelabu’s spokesperson, Bolaji Tunji, affirmed the minister’s commitment to implementing targeted subsidies for low-income households but insisted that Nigerians must begin to pay appropriate prices for the electricity they consume.
