The police in Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, have arrested a 25-year-old student for allegedly stealing cell phones and recharge cards worth N6,250.
The suspect, Simeon Elu, who resides at 7, Osifeso Street, Oshodi, was arrested along Social Club Road, Abule Egba, by residents of the area who monitored his movements around the area.
Speaking with P.M.NEWS, one of the residents who simply gave his name as Baba Ijesha, said he and some of his friends noticed that the young man was going up and down Babs Ladipo Street and so they decided to keep an eye on him but pretended not to watch him.
He said before long, the young man entered one of the shops, picked up a cell phone and immediately stopped an okada, (commercial motorcycle) and jumped on it. He commanded the rider to move, so they quickly took another okada, pursued and caught him along Social Club Road.
The timely intervention of Anti-Terror Squad, ATS, attached to one Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG, prevented him from being lynched by the angry mob.
According to Baba Ijesha, the ATS officer later contacted the police at Oko-Oba who then came to take the suspect to the station.
Items recovered from him at the time of his arrest include one red Blackberry cell phone, one S-Mobile phone S5130 and assorted recharge cards valued at N6,250.
Speaking with P.M.NEWS, the suspect, Simeon Elu, said he is a student of Government Technical College, Otagbe in Delta State and that the hard economic situation pushed him into stealing.
The suspect also revealed how he operates thus: “When I want to steal, I will watch the victim very well if he or she has a shop and when the person is very busy, I will sneak into the shop and pick either the cell phone or if there is money on the table, I will take the money and stop any available okada and speed off.”

Though we know that poverty is not a good thing, but should all of us in this country now turn to criminal? because our government are not doing anything to eradicate poverty?let us  pray for true love and the fear of God into all the citizens of this country. So we are not going to be killing ourselves directly on indirectly, is the owner of a shop by the roadside is part of the our useless leaders? He would have find something better doing to stealing, before he will get promotion to robbery.May God us.

Times are pretty hard but stealing should not be an alternative.
