According to the FRSC's Corps Marshal and Chief Executive, Mr. Osita Chidoka, Nigeria accounts for the least number of vehicles but it has the highest number of road crash casualties.
Chidoka, who spoke in Abuja during the first executive meeting of the Christian Association of Nigeria, said that Nigeria was among developing countries contributing 50 per cent of 1.3 million deaths annually across the globe as a result of road traffic crashes.
A statement by the FRSC, which was obtained on Monday, quoted the corps marshal as lamenting that while the developed countries were taking definite measures to address the menace of road crashes through effective traffic engineering, legislation and enforcement, "Nigeria is saddled with serious traffic challenges, which can be attributed to lack of adequate road signs, markings and other relevant safety components to ensure safer road use."
The corps marshal said that the church was considered as an effective platform to pursue road safety ideals and transformation of the Nigerian motoring public.
He stressed that the FRSC had outlined a number of strategies of partnership with the church to further rev up its advocacy for safety consciousness in Nigeria.
Chidoka later decorated some executive members of the CAN as honorary special marshals.
Oritsejafor also identified the issuance of fake driving licences to some unqualified motorists as contributory factor since such drivers were not acquainted with road signs and proper driving skills thus posing serious traffic hazards to other road users.
He, however, commended FRSC for considering church leaders as strategic partners in the collective drive to reduce road traffic crashes in Nigeria through the honorary membership of special marshals.
