No fewer than two persons were feared dead in Ibadan, Oyo State capital on Tuesday, during a bloody clash between pupils of two secondary schools in the metropolis.
PUNCH METRO gathered that some teachers were also reportedly injured and vehicles vandalised during the clash.
The clash was said to be between pupils of Ibadan City Academy, Eleta, and Community Grammar School, Kudeti.
An eyewitness told our correspondent that the two schools had earlier engaged each other in a brawl on Monday, leaving one of the pupils dead. The Tuesday incident was said to be a reprisal.
A female pupil of one of the schools was said to have invited some hoodlums who assisted in unleashing the mayhem.
The hoodlums were said to have attacked teachers when the principal could not be found.
About seven suspects were said to have been arrested in connection with the incident.
One of the injured teachers, Mr. Atanda Bamigbade, said that the hoodlums stormed the staff room and started unleashing terror on the teachers.
He gave the names of his colleagues attacked by the hoodlums as Mrs. Toyin Omotoso, Mrs. T. Makanjuola, and the security guard, Mr. R.O. Lawal.
Some vehicles vandalised during the clash include a Sunny Nissan saloon marked ND 96 KJA (Lagos), an Honda car marked AU 686 NRK (Oyo). Others are vehicles with registration numbers NB 74AAA (Lagos), AG 970 KSF (Lagos), AV 819 BDJ (Oyo).
When contacted on the telephone at press time, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Saliu Hashimu, said he had not been briefed on the incident.
Meanwhile, men of the Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday killed two suspected armed robbers and arrested one. Two other suspects, however, escaped.
PUNCH METRO gathered that the suspects, numbering, six, engaged in a series of armed robberies from Okota, Ojuelegba and Ilupeju before they were confronted by a team of policemen.
The arrested suspect, Hakeem Adeola, 26, said he and his cohorts on Monday night, took off in a Mercedez Benz 190 car and robbed some private homes at Surulere randomly before setting out for Okota.
Adeola, who claimed to be a commercial bus driver at Iyana-Ipaja before taking to crime, said when they got to Okota, they decided to rob motorists who were held up in traffic.
He said they beat up four men in a Toyota Camry and robbed them of their car because they were reluctant to surrender the car key.
He recalled that “after we seized their car, we transferred all the items we had stolen from the Mercedez Benz to the Toyota,” and thereafter took the operation to Ilupeju.
At the Town Planning area of Ilupeju, they set up a road block and robbed motorists before the police got a distress call and swung into action immediately.
Adeola said when they saw the police patrol, three members of the gang took to their heels, while two others, Seun and Lanre, ran into the car and engaged the police in a gun battle.
The suspect said while Seun and Lanre were killed, he hid in a nearby garden but was later arrested.
Adeola, who urged the police to be lenient with him, said he had robbed five times and made at least N20,000 in each operation. He identified three other fleeing members of the gang as Tola, Akin and Ola.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, said, “We appeal to members of the public to continue to give useful information to the police that will assist us in combating crimes.
“If I may add, the three suspects disappeared into thin air while efforts are still being made by the police to get them arrested and as I speak to you, police are still combing the area towards ensuring that the suspects are actually apprehended. But I want to give kudos to the Divisional Police Officer, SP Gbolahan Olugbemi, for coordinating activities that led to the arrest of one of the armed robbers and death of two of them.
The police recovered 34 mobile phones, N89, 275; four locally-made guns; one laptop; five cartridges; one gold ring; five wrist-watches and a car from the suspects.
Another victim, Oshunuga Olusegun, said, “What happened was that we went for a vigil and on our way back around 3am, approaching Adeoye Close popularly known as St. Raphael Street, Ago Palace Way, as we burst out to link Ago Road, we then saw a Mercedes Benz 190 that wanted to turn around the Mr. Biggs’.
“The next thing we saw was that we were double-crossed after we tried to escape. They jumped down with their guns and we locked our vehicles and we later opened the doors because of the guns. They searched us and took everything we had on us. They even wanted to shoot the driver but we begged.
“We lodged a complaint at the nearest police station and then we used Adeyi’s (one of the car’s occupants) phone because it wasn’t collected. We then called the 121 emergency number and when we were at the station, we heared waves coming on the radio about our stolen car.”
Olusegun commended the police for their timely response, adding that “ I was also surprised at the way they were communicating with each other.”
