The younger brother of the Shehu of Borno, Abba Anas Garbai El-Kanemi was on Monday shot dead by gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect. Daily Sun gathered that the gunmen had stormed the Gangaram Ward of Shehuri North, the home of the prince in the city at about 9 pm on Monday and shot him.
Sources said the assailants, whose number could not be ascertained as at press time might have arrived the area in a VolksWagon golf car, adding that a golf car had speed off after the gun shot.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Borno State Police Command, Abdulahi Lawal, an assistant superintendent of Police described the incident as unfortunate, adding that the police were determined to tackle the Boko Haram problem head long. He said the new strategy put in place by the police would finally put to rest, the anxiety and apprehension of the citizenry over the security situation in the state.
One of the relations of the deceased who preferred anonymity told journalists that he was with the Shehu at the palace when the news of Prince Anas was broken. “We were at the palace when somebody called that Abba Anas had been shot by gunmen. We rushed to the scenebut by the time we got there, he was confirmed dead as he laid in the pool of his blood. So we took him to the palace to prepare him for burial,” he explained.
