No fewer than six people sustained injuries in four separate accidents that occurred on the Ikorodu Road in Lagos on Monday.

Our correspondent, who visited one of the accident scenes at Maryland Bus Stop, learnt that a commercial bus while speeding, wanted to switch lanes, causing a vehicle behind to ram into it.

An eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Azu, said, “One commercial bus was over speeding and suddenly tried to change lanes but unknown to him, there was an oncoming minibus right behind it.

“Of course the minibus rammed into it but the bus was not severely damaged so the driver did not stop. Unfortunately, the minibus was damaged almost beyond repair and the two occupants sustained injuries.”

An official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency told our correspondent that the accidents were as a result of over speeding, adding that motorists did not regard traffic rules.

He said “The problem with motorists in Lagos is that whenever the road is free, they think it’s an automatic licence to overspeed.

“Today(Monday), four accidents occurred and we rescued six victims. There was one at Onipanu involving a gray Hyundai with registration number ND173 AAA; one occured at Fadeyi involving a black Toyota Prado with registration number FG650B20,

“Also, another accident happened near New Garage Bus Stop involving a red Mazda pickup with registration number HN 300AAA and now this one (he points to the minibus) with registration number Lagos NQ143AAA “

Our correspondent observed that motorists resorted to using the lanes designated for BRT buses as the accidents led to heavy vehicular traffic.

One of the officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, who was also at the scene administering first aid treatment to the victims, said they would be taken to Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja for treatment.

“These two victims like the other four we have rescued will be taken to LASUTH for treatment. Fortunately, no one died today,” the official, who did not disclose her name, said.
