Witnesses said the incident happened around 5 am as the bus was coming towards Lokoja and in an attempt to evade armed robbers who had stopped a Chisco bus with registration number XL 300 ABC and robbing the passengers. The 50 passengers were said to have died on the spot.
“The armed robbers blocked one side of the single lane road with their vehicle and were operating on the other side of the road. They stopped the luxury bus and asked the occupants to come down and lie down facing the ground, and started robbing them of their money, phones and other valuables. The corpses were taken to the hospital by the rescue team of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).”
But, the Lokoja Sector Commander of the FRSC Sunday Maku, who confirmed the accident, said only 14 persons died in the accident, while the driver escaped unhurt.
He said while the robbery was going on, another luxury bus that was coming from Lagos could not stopped when the robbers flagged the driver down to stop but he ran over the passengers that were ordered to lie down .
“When the Luxury bus ran over them, the truck following the bus from behind also ran over them leaving 14 persons dead with their skull scattered and their body mangled. We had to look for body bags to carry them because they could not be carried as hole but in pieces. We were able to scoop some brain and bones while some are still there because blood flowed like water.
“Among the 14 that died were 10 adult males, three adult females and one male child while the driver survived the incident,” he said
He said the armed robbers ran away from the scene immediately after the bus ran over the passengers.
Maku said the corpses were deposited at the State Specialist Hospital and the Federal Medical Centre in Lokoja while the driver of the bus which passengers were run over and the vehicle are with the police.
He advised motorist and passengers to avoid night journey because of its attendant effect, saying that apart from robbery incident accident could also happened.
