Chimezie Okezie, the Trainee Manager of Shoprite, Enugu State, has urged Nigerians to start using coins in transacting businesses.

Okezie, who was reacting to the rejection of coins by some of Shoprite’s customers, said that coins remained legal tender until the government reversed it.

“Why we are using coins here is that we like the citizens of this country to be using coins because we found out that most people don’t use them,” he said. “But as long as this place, Shoprite, is concerned, we encourage people to use it.”

Some of the customers said they rejected coins because they were no longer acceptable in markets and supermarkets.

Ada Egwuatu, a fashion designer, said she would not accept coins because traders would not receive them in markets.

“If you go to the market, they will reject them,” she said. “At times if you go to the banks, they will also reject them. They should phase it out. The cheapest thing you can buy is pure water at N5 or sweet or chewing gum. You cannot really use them to buy anything in the market.”

A civil servant, Stanley Maduka, said he accepted coins but could not carry or use them to buy anything in return
