Some few years ago cyber cafes were springing up everywhere across the country. Despite the high cost of getting internet service from the ISPs cyber cafes still made some nice profits as many persons took to the new fad of daytime and even night browsing. The yahoo boys contributed to keeping cyber cafes busy as well.

Today, however, in almost every major neighbourhood you find cyber cafes shutting down. It therefore worries one a bit to see several persons making serious enquiries as to how to set up a cyber cafe business. While we may not want to sound discouraging the basic foundation to setting a vable business is looking at immediate future prospects of such business idea.

Giving the evolving and present economic condition in Nigeria setting up a cyber cafe is not a very wise decision. Unless the investor has the capacity to add several other revenue channels to boost bottomline.

Here are three dangers to watch out for if you must embark on setting up a cyber cafe business;

1.   Reducing Cost of Internet Access: while decreasing internet costs is a plus for your cyber cafe it also will ensure that more people can afford to browse the internet at their home or office. As the competition grows hotter many internet service companies including the telecom companies are going to keep pushing out cheaper internet access data bundles and modems for the personal use of millions of Nigerians.

As more Nigerians also exploit the opportunities of running online businesses few will run the risk of using cyber cafe if they can afford modems for internet service at their own homes and offices. This is a challenge that may be tough to overcome.

2.   The Laptop Phenomenon: laptops once cost an arm and a leg, to acquire desktops were more accessible then even though far more bulky and unsuitable for use by persons always on the move.

Today, virtually every comfortable adult can afford a laptop. This has not helped cyber cafe business as the decreasing cost of laptops combined with more affordable internet service means that more people can afford to stay away from cafes and browse in privacy.

3.   The Power Issue: if you ask any cafe operator he’ll most probably tell you that his biggest expenditure is on power. Having to buy diesel or petrol for generators cuts deep into the little profit made from the business. This doesn’t mean you can’t go on to start a cyber cafe business. It’s just so you know what you’re going into.
