Occupants of three commercial buses were early on Monday robbed at Orie Umumba, in Ezeagu local government area of Enugu State. An eye witness said that the robbers were armed and masked during the operation.

According to the account, the robbers laid siege on one lane of the Enugu-Onitsha dual carriageway, along the Umumba-Ndiagu section as early as 8am firing into the air.

Three vehicles, Happiness Mass Transit, XJA95NSH, Romchi Mass Transit, XD743AWK and a Peace Mass Transit bus, which number could not be ascertained as at press time, fell victim to the attack.

The attack brought traffic to a standstill on the busy dual carriageway for almost 45 minutes.

Stranded passengers including some police escorts disembarked from their vehicles and took positions along the road, ready to make a dash into nearby bushes. However, traffic started moving at about 8.45am when the Enugu State police command mobilised its men to the scene.

The police public relations officer for the state, Mr Ebere Amarizu, had earlier assured when contacted on telephone that policemen would be mobilised to the scene. The robbers had departed the scene when police help arrived.

One of the victims, Bob Ude said that the Peace Mass Transit bus he was travelling in from Enugu unknowingly ran into the robbers. He said that in a bid to escape, the driver tried to outrun the robbers but was forced into one of the nearby bushes where they were robbed.

Mr Ude said that he and most other passengers escaped the scene by fleeing leaving all their personal effects behind. He said that the fate of the driver was unknown, that he might have been killed by the robbers due to his resistance.

Another passenger, Sebastine Nnalue who was sobbing, said that he had just lost all the money he was taking to Onitsha for a business transaction to the robbers.

The area is notorious for armed robbery attack on travellers.
