• Worried family, friends beg for return of 23-year-old undergraduate abducted in Ago Iwoye

TWENTY-THREE YEAR-OLD Olamilekan Wasiu Balogun began nursing lofty dreams soon after gaining admission to read Business Administration at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Ago Iwoye, Ogun State.

Family and friends looked upon him with great expectations, praying that things would work out well for him.

Also, he had very frequently been heard talking of how he hoped, in future, to use his education as a means of escape from poverty, for himself and his family.

His parents strained to see their son’s dream come true and had done everything possible to see he did not lack the essentials.

But those dreams and efforts put in to realize them are gradually turning into a mirage, as since June 5, 2011, Balogun’s friends and relations have not seen or heard from him.

They do not know his whereabouts as he was   allegedly kidnapped.

His distraught mother who came weeping to The Guardian accompanied by two of her colleagues, narrated how her son has been missing since June.

“On June 6, I got a call that Olalekan has been missing in school after he went to visit Mariam, his girlfriend, with his friends.

“ While in his girlfriend’s place, he became hungry and both of them decided to go out to buy fufu.

“ The girl said on their way out, two men on motorcycle rode past, looked them over, reversed and attacked Segun.

“ The girl told me that by the time she ran back to inform Segun’s friends about what was happening, they had taken him away.

“Since then, nothing has been heard of my son.”

Mrs. Balogun also said Segun’s girlfriend said she could identify the two boys who took Segun away, giving their names as

Ogungbe Ganiu, also known as Ajela and Segun known as ‘General.’

She continued: “ When we reported the incident to the traditional ruler of the area, he immediately made a call, asking the people to ensure they released Segun, and they replied:’ Yes, Sir’.

“But ever since then, that phone number has   been switched off.”

She noted that Segun had never been a troublemaker, but an easy-going lad so much admired that when the matter was reported to the school authorities, an investigation into the matter to know if it was a cult case was launched.

“Segun was found not to have any cult links. My son was clean.”

But five months on, the police are still on the trail of the suspects without any arrests or information about his whereabouts.

The Ogun State Police Command and the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) declared the two suspects wanted, but nothing has been heard.

The woman, whom her colleagues said was dying slowly out of grief for her missing son, has called on Nigerians to help find him.

“ Nigerians should please come to my aid and help me find my son.

“He is the light of my home.”

The missing undergraduate, an active member on Facebook, had on May 31, five days to his disappearance, posted his last message: “Thank God for helping me see this day, looking forward to a good month ahead.”

Mrs. Blowgun said, “the police say they are working  hard to unravel his mysterious disappearance, but nothing has been heard and I fear for my son, ” she lamented.

The Student Union Leader of OOU, Mr. Rufai Uthman, told The Guardian that Balogun was abducted by the said Ajela along Aiyegbami Street, Ago-Iwoye and has since not been found despite spirited efforts in that respect.

He confirmed that the traditional ruler and his chiefs had been working in conjunction with the university authorities to ensure that the missing student “is found alive while vowing that the suspects will be made to face justice.
