Armed robbers have sent a man to his early grave on his daughter’s birthday in Lagos. Johnson Obasan, 48, popularly called Officer was said to have withdrawn over N1 million from a bank in Apapa. He was returning home with the money at about 12.30 pm on Monday but unknown to him armed robbers who operated on a motorcycle were trailing him behind.
One of the victim’s relatives identified simply as Sunday said the bandits waylaid the fish merchant, Obasan and his friend identified simply as Yellow along Marine Road, Apapa. Immediately Obasan suspected that the two persons on the motorcycle were armed robbers, he attempted to run inside a nearby residence. The security man at the gate suspected danger and quickly locked the door of the gate. Yellow was said to have shouted at Obasan to surrender the cash to the hoodlums.
The armed robbers immediately shot Obasan in the back. Yellow was also wounded on the leg. Daily Sun gathered that immediately the police detective attached to Apapa Police Station on patrol duty heard the first shot, they raced to the scene. On sighting the crime fighters approaching, the hoodlums abandoned the money and rode off.
Two of the detectives chased them with another motorcycle while the other policeman alerted the Divisional Police Officer of the Station, Mr. Mohammed Muazu, a Chief Superintendent of Police. Muazu also sent signals to his policemen to lay ambush for the fleeing robbers. Unfortunately they escaped.
Muazu ordered that the victims should be rushed to the hospital. The police recovered N1,079,180, two mobile phones, bank cheque book and a pair of sandals belonging to the deceased. When Daily Sun visited Obasan’s home at Oguntokun Street, Olodi-Apapa, family members, sympathisers and residents wailed. His wife, Mrs. Obasan told Daily Sun that her 7-year- old daughter, Ayo wanted to mark her birthday that fateful day. Mrs. Obasan said people were cooking and drinks were made available before her husband decided to go and withdraw money from the bank.
She cried that her husband did not even eat his food before the evil men terminated his life. Meanwhile Yellow was still in hospital receiving treatment while the policemen had deposited the body of Obasan in a General Hospital Morgue. One of the policemen at the station disclosed that Muazu had handed over the cash and items recovered to the deceased’s brothers who signed on behalf of the family. One of them called Sunday decided that police should accompany them so that they would deposit the cash in the bank for safe keeping.
