NLC warns FG, govs over National Minimum Wage Act

Written by Soji-Eze Fagbemi, Abuja Friday, 18 November 2011

PRESIDENT of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar, has warned the Federal Government, as well as the state governors over the secret plan to amend the N18,000 National Minimum Wage Act, even when its implementation is yet to commence fully.

But, in a swift reaction, the Ondo State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, said the governors had not met to discuss and take position on the issue, adding, however, that it was offensive for the Federal Government to unilaterally impose what state should pay its employees without their full involvement.

Both Comrade Omar and Mimiko spoke on Thursday, at the seventh National Labour Relations Summit of the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS), Ilorin, Kwara State.

The NLC president regretted that the Federal Government, with support from the state governors, had concluded to review the national minimum wage, adding that it was an attempt to ensure that the N18,000 minimum wage was eliminated.

Governor Mimiko, however, said the governors had not met to take position on the issue, claiming that the agreement was reached without full participation of the governors, a development he described as “very offensive.”
