A 23-year-old housewife, Maimuna Baffa, on Sunday at Medile area of Kano State had her throat slashed with a knife by a man, Ibrahim Abdullahi, who posed as an official of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria.
PUNCH METRO learnt that the incident occurred around 3pm when Maimuna’s husband, Aminu, was not home.
Aminu said the suspect asked Maimuna to open the door to her apartment but she declined, saying her husband had already paid the electricity bill.
He said Abdullahi insisted that he must read the meter before leaving. Aminu added that his wife bowed to pressure and allowed the fake official to enter the apartment.
He said, “As soon as Abdullahi came into the house, he shut the door and grabbed Maimuna by the neck. Afterward, he slashed her throat with a sharp knife. He also took some valuables and her handset before he ran out of the scene.
“At first, when neighbours heard Maimuna crying for help while she was struggling with the attacker, they thought that she was possessed by evil spirit and so they did not bother to come to her aid.”
He said when the cry persisted, the neighbours called his uncle who arrived the scene with other people and met Maimuna in her pool of blood, gasping for breath.
PUNCH METROgathered that Aminu rushed got home and with the help of some good Samaritans, Maimuna was rushed to the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano. She was later transferred to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for an operation.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Kano State Command, Magaji Majiya, who confirmed the attack, said the suspect was later arrested.
Majiya said the 23-year-old suspect had confessed committing the crime.
This occurred barely two months after another housewife and her daughter were stabbed to death by a suspected drug addict in Yakasai quarters of the state.
Majiya explained that the victim is now recuperating at the hospital, while the suspect was assisting the police in their investigation.
He said as soon as the investigation was completed, the suspect would be charged to court.
Findings by PUNCH METRO showed that the assailant was arrested by the police at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital when he went there to treat a fresh wound.
When questioned on how he got the injury, he claimed to have fallen from the staircase of a building.
It was also discovered that Abdullahi had been extorting money from residents, claiming to be PHCN employee.
In a related development, the police spokesman, said another man, Saidu Tajudeen, poured some substance suspected to be acid on the face of his girlfriend, Nana Ramotu.
He explained that the incident occurred last Tuesday at about 11:30pm at 66 Niger Road, Kano.
Majiya said Ramotu is now receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital, while her attacker is in custody of the police.
