Kano state police spokesman Magaji Musa Majiya said the shooting happened Friday in the capital Kano, a city of more than 9 million people already under siege by the sect known as Boko Haram. He said officers killed three sect members in the attack, but others dragged the bodies away.
The spokesman blamed the attack on Boko Haram, which carried out an attack Jan. 20 in Kano that saw police stations, immigration offices and the local headquarters of the secret police attacked. Boko Haram is carrying out increasingly bloody attacks against Nigeria's weak central government.
