The Lagos State government yesterday shut down the popular Mile 12 market over its filthy state, and causing heavy traffic along the Lagos-Ikorodu Road.

Also yesterday, the state government threatened to shut the Oko-Oba Abattoir in Agege if it does not improve on its hygiene.

Men of the state’s Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Miscellaneous Offences, arrived that Mile 12 market before midday and closed all the gates leading into the market, bringing business activities to a standstill.

In a telephone interview with Daily Trust, the state’s Commissioner for Environment, Tunji Bello said the market had to be shut down because the sanitary situation in the market is poor.

Bello added that the ministry contacted leaders of the market a couple of weeks ago, complaining about the poor sanitation in the market and  conversion of the car park meant for customer’s  vehicles  to stalls by the market leaders.

The commissioner added that the Lagos-Ikorodu highway around Mile 12 market is always congested because trailers that bring foodstuffs to the market make it difficult for easy flow of traffic in the area.

“These trailers discharge foodstuffs right on the highway, causing heavy traffic and untold hardship for motorists heading for Ikorodu and its environs. The women and men in this market have not helped matters regarding the sanitation of the market. We also discovered that most of them dump their wastes in the drainage, and they have refused to yield to warnings from the ministry,” he said.

Bello said the market will remain shut until the leadership of the market complies with the directive from the ministry to  keep the market and its environs clean, ensure the trailers drive into the market to discharge their goods and demolish the stalls built on the space  meant for  a car park in the market.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Co-operatives, Mr. Gbolahan Lawal on his part, said that the state government is considering closing down the Oko-Oba abattoir during the inauguration of a 23 man task force.
