Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, while presenting cheques to the affected families at Government House Kano shortly after a meeting with stakeholders in the state on Wednesday, explained that the monies were realised from public-spirited individuals and organisations to help alleviate the plight of those who lost their loved ones as a result of the unfortunate incident.
Out of the 185 victims identified so far, five were senior Police officers whose families got N1.5 million each while the other 156 bereaved families got N1 million each.
A breakdown of the money collected as donation showed that CBN gave the lions share of N100 million, Alhaji Sayyu Dantata N50 million, Katsina and Jigawa State governments N20 million each, Kaduna and Bauchi states, N10 million each while Kogi State government and ASD Motors gave N5 million each, while Alhaji Kabiru Sani Kwangila also gave N20 million.
Governor Kwankwaso explained that the gesture was “a modest effort to enable the beneficiaries start up endeavours to cater for themselves since their bread winners were no more”.
The governor also charged them to do something meaningful to survive; pointing out that the best thing that could be done for the deceased now was to pray for them.
On the report of the 15-man consultative committee set up by the government at the end of the last Kano Elders’ Consultative Meeting in the aftermath of the January 20th bombings, the governor explained that proactive measures have been taken to implement the recommendations that fall within the responsibility of the state government.
Besides, the provision of infrastructural facilities, he stated that the government is doing a lot in the area of job creation and skills development to make the teeming youth in the state more useful to themselves and the society.
