According to the police, the locals had filed a complaint against the three for running the racket from their residence in the Kasba area. The police raided their house on Thursday night and picked up the trio along with a girl. They were produced in a local court but their bail plea was rejected and they were send to a three-day police custody.
The arrest has caught the officials from respective clubs by surprise. Raju Ahmed, secretary, Mohammedan Sporting, told Mirror, “Hasan, a defender, has been playing for our club for the past two years. We never had any complaints against him. He is a talented player and is very popular with the team. We never expected him to do such a thing.”
Interestingly, in the 23-team league, Mohammedan Sporting has the best defensive record. They conceded only four goals in seven matches and Hassan played a big role in that.
Meanwhile, Kalighat Milan Sangha’s Micheal Tayo is a seasoned campaigner. He had earlier represented top I-League teams like Air India and Sporting Clube de Goa.
Kalighat’s president Ajit Banerjee blasted the guilty players for bringing disrepute to the club. “They should be punished if they are found guilty. How can you do such a thing when you are playing professional football? I don’t have any sympathy for such people and club won’t take any responsibility to bail them out,” said Banerjee.
With final phase of the league just ten days away, the absence of these players would surely hurt the clubs.
