KANO — SEVERAL police officers were, yesterday, feared dead when some gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members attacked the Mandawari Police Station located within the precincts of Emir’s palace during the morning rush hour in Kano metropolis.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen arrived on a motorcycle at about 7.42 am and launched vicious assault on the station trigerring stampede among residents.

This happened as tragedy was averted in Kaduna following the early discovery of a live bomb neatly planted in the Tudun Wada home of a former Chairmant of Kaduna South Local Government Area, Mr Auwalu Tafoki.
The deadly object was, however, promptly detonated by the police anti-bomb disposal unit. The discovery created panic and anxiety making residents of the area to scamper for their safety as it was believed that the bomb would have destroyed the whole area if it had not been discovered on time.
Mandawari Station in Kano State had witnessed several attacks by unknown gunmen in the last couple of weeks leaving in its throes death and injury.

The Joint Task Force, JTF, has since cordoned off the affected part of the city even as soldiers combed the areas for possible clue that will lead to arrest of suspects.

Kano State witnessed similar attacks last Friday when unknown gunmen attacked Rijiyar’Zaki Police Station where one Ali Sadiq was shot dead during the cross-fire.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Kano State, Musa Majia confirmed the incident but declined to give detailed explanation of what happened then.

He said: “We are going to issue a statement on what transpired soon.” However, later in the evening, the police said that a serving police officer killed a suspected member of Boko Haram during an attack at his residence by gun totting men on motorcycle on Sunday evening in Kano.

The gallant officer was said to have engaged his attackers in a fight for life and successfully disarmed one of the assailant and shot him at close range.

A press statement issued by the police in Kano and made available to Vanguard explained that “on March 11, 2012 about 9am, two armed men on motorcycle attacked a police officer at his residence located at Tarauni area of Kano municipality. The officer disarmed one of the hoodlums and shot him dead with the riffle while the motorcycle and 21 rounds of ammunition were abandoned and recovered”.

Meanwhile, police sources said in Kaduna that the bomb in the former Chairman’s house was found wrapped, was discovered inside the compound at the early hours of yesterday by the owner of the house himself Mr Auwalu, who lives at W 15, Gangara Road, Sabon Gari, Tudun Wada.

When Vanguard spoke with Auwalu, who was visibly shaking shortly after the explosive was detonated right inside his compound.

He said, “When I came out and saw the object, I asked my family numbering 10 which were all inside then whether any of them knew anything about the wrapped object and they said no.

I then directed that nobody should go closer to the object and then alerted the police.
”The police Anti Bomb Squad came and saw it for themselves and they later detonated it.

”No casualty was recorded. I give God all the glory for His protection”.

Auwalu’s house was about a stone throw from the famous Al-Furquan Nursery/ Primary and Islamic School where sympathizers troop out in their numbers in utter amazement over the incident.
