President Goodluck Jonathan last night fired back at a group of Northern Progressives who had earlier accused him of plotting to secure a "third Term" with the Justice Alfa Belgore Committee, warning them to desist from deliberately distracting his Government , and wondering why he should be concerned about a third term bid when in actual sense, he is still serving his first Term.
The Northern Group under the aegis of Coalition of Northern Leaders had earlier on thursday in Abuja, accused the President of tenure elongation tendencies with the setting up of the Justice Alfa Belgore Committee on Constitution Review. The Group in a Communique issued after an elaborate Meeting of Stakeholders and read by its Leader and convener Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has raised an alarm of sinister intent of the Presidency to advance his third term bid, and vowing to stop him at all cost.
The Group also faulted the present revenue allocation formula, claiming it is even a greater disservice to the Oil producing States, as it puts so much wealth on the hands of their Governors who he claimed cannot manage them.
"Indigenes of the Oil producing States have become victims because the revenue acruing to their States are far beyond what their Governors can manage", the Communique reads.
The Group further carpeted the 13percent derivation policy calling it a counter-productive one. It further demystified its stand by saying that the policy encourages hyper-inflation in the benefiting States, their neighbours and the entire Country.
"This Law as it exists is a violation of a subsisting judgement by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, a fact openly admitted to by the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
"The revenue allocation Law violates the International Law of Sea Convention, and should therefore be repelled".
The Group also charged the Government to revoke all running contracts for Oil Blocks and Oil lifting, while urging the her to totally and comprehensively review the importation of all refined products as well as the immediate arrest and prosecution of all those involved in Oil racketing, bunkery and running of illegal Refineries.
They expressed their readiness to mobilize the rest of the Country to foil President Jonathan's 7yrs tenure in 2015 which they alleged he intends to actualize using the Belgore Committee.
"We will mobilize the entire Country with the North as its head, to rise to oppose the tenure elongation for the President"
In a response through his Spokeman, Dr. Rueben Abati, President Jonathan said he is rather focusing on governance and remained committed to his transformation agenda. He said, he refused to be distracted by those playing the politics of succession.
"It is evident that the Belgore Committee was set up to look at the outcomes of previous political conferences and recommendations, and I am not aware of any report submitted anywhere making any recommendations. We should expect that people who claim to be major stakeholders in the Nigerian Project, when they make contributions, their contributions will show commonsense and decency. Comments on the reports of the Belgore Committee that has not been concluded and a report that has not yet been submitted will amount to witchcraft, if you like sorcery, and it is therefore curious and entirely mischievous. As far as I know, the Belgore Committee has not concluded its work" he said.
