In a significant development, John Nwankwo Noko, a Nigerian national caught on CCTV camera assaulting a Kenyan woman confined to a wheelchair in Nairobi, has been deported from the country.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2024, gained widespread attention after footage of Nwankwo's assault on Ms. Pauline circulated widely on social media. In the distressing video, Nwankwo is seen violently striking Ms. Pauline in the head while she remained defenseless in her wheelchair, prompting intervention from onlookers.
According to a statement released by Anne Wang’ombe, the Principal Secretary of the State Department of Gender, Nwankwo's deportation on Saturday, May 4, 2024, was a response to his physical assault on Ms. Pauline, sparking concerns about Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the community.
Wang’ombe emphasized that the incident not only infringed upon the rights of an individual but also shed light on the broader issue of gender-based violence prevalent in society.
The case was brought to the attention of the authorities by Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba on May 1, following the circulation of the viral video on social media. Orwoba, upon visiting Ms. Pauline at her residence, reported that the victim feared for her life due to continuous threats from her Nigerian partner.
Senator Orwoba's prompt action led to the report of the matter at Karen Police Station and subsequent involvement of the offices of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kindiki Kithure and Immigration PS Julius Bitok.
Confirming Nwankwo's deportation, the Gender PS affirmed that he had been arrested and processed for deportation, signaling a swift response to acts of violence against women.
Senator Orwoba, a staunch advocate against violence targeting women, reiterated the urgent need to address rising cases of gender-based violence, emphasizing the profound physical and emotional impact on victims and its corrosive effect on society's moral fabric.
"We strongly condemn such behavior and we shall continue working towards creating a safer environment for women, free of fear,” Senator Orwoba concluded, underscoring the collective commitment to combatting gender-based violence and ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals in the community.
