The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab is suggesting a significant policy shift regarding the demolition of illegal structures in the state.

This shift might involve making residents financially responsible for the demolition of their own houses if they are found to be illegal.

Wahab disclosed this on Tuesday while replying to a comment by Ola Kasali, who tweeted with the handle @Olakaslas on X (formerly Twitter) requesting that a user who called out the Lagos State Government for demolishing their buildings in Mende estate at Kosofe Local Government Area of the state recently should be made to pay for demolition and cleaning fees.

This approach could serve as a deterrent against building without proper permits or in prohibited areas.

It also puts the burden of compliance on the residents themselves, potentially incentivizing them to adhere to regulations more closely.

However, such a policy shift could also face challenges, particularly regarding its fairness and potential impact on vulnerable communities.
