A soldier, identified as Lance Corporal Charles Ekefure, was reportedly shot on Thursday at the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto

The incident occurred amidst protests by detained soldiers who broke out of their cells, demanding better living conditions and food.

The soldiers had requested to speak with Major General Mutkut Godwin, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Nigerian Army.

According to Sahara reporters, over 100 soldiers are being held in cramped conditions at the 8 Division, with some detained for four to five years without trial.

The source described the facilities as overcrowded, with up to 10 soldiers in small rooms and many sleeping in the corridors
