I have been an ardent supporter of GMB especially during the 2011 general elections where I committed enormous personal resources to travel along with his campaign train. I have tremendous personal respect for him and only a few days ago wrote a personal letter to him advising him to be wary of those who are pushing him to contest for the presidency of Nigeria again in 2015.
I advised GMB in the letter that as a reasonable man if he can cut off the shields of hangers on and allows himself to be convinced to endorse a pan Nigerian candidate not necesarily a muslim from the north, he would be holding a double edged sword in his hand with which he can come through to reaffirm his statemanship and put to rest the fear that he is all about the north.
I was therefore befuddled to read that while receiving a delegation of CPC members from Niger state, GMB was quoted as saying "Since the leaders now don’t listen to anybody but do whatever they wish, there is nothing the NORTH can do" (caps mine).
In a polity where the biggest dent to GMB's image has always been his potrayal him as a religious and regional bigot, there would not have been better ammunition to murder Buhari politically than the one he provided by his unguarded and disgraceful utterance quoted above.
GMB was further quoted as saying "If what happenend in 2011 should again happen in 2015, by the grace of God, 'the dog and the baboon' would all be soaked in blood".
Buhari got it twisted when he made allusions to "bloodbath" in 2015 at such a time when the orgy of violence (in most parts of northern Nigeria) heralding the election of President Goodluck Jonathan in April 2011is still fresh in the mind of Nigerians.
With the wide spread belief that Boko Haram is a sponsored terrorist organization with a mandate to destabilize the government of President Goodluck Jonathan and make Nigeria ungovernable, Buhari couldnt have given a now dour and colourless Dr. Reuben Abati (and his crew of new media warriors) stronger nails to seal his (Buhari's) coffin.
I am amazed that Buhari and CPC's media team could not find a better line to defend Buhari's obvious gaffe than to recourse to inneundos and mud slinging against the person President Goodluck Jonathan.
I am equally amazed that some seemingly enlightened folks have elevated their followership of General Muhammadu Buhari to "cult" level such that they would rather cast aspersions on others by trying to justify Buhari's obvious gaffe rather than sincerely call Buhari to order for the love of Nigeria.
It is sad and unfortunate.
