The Kano State Police Command yesterday disclosed that it had killed 17 suspected gunmen who attacked the police post at Dala with multiple explosions on Tuesday night.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, said three of the suspected gunmen were arrested, while the command defused 14 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted in different locations by the gunmen.
He said: “The extremists, whose numbers were about 30, attacked policemen on duty with assault rifles and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and the policemen gallantly repelled the attacks.”
Addressing journalists yesterday at the command conference room, the Commissioner of police lamented that the command lost one police officer and another injured with gunshot.
He added that: “Some extremists launched an attacks with bombs and assault rifles in Dala Police Station, Jakara Police Barracks, Goron Dutse Division, Panshekara Division, 52 Squadron Mobile Police Unit in Challawa and also planted a bomb at Junior Secondary School, Sabuwar Doka in Ungogo local government area.”
The commissioner explained that the command also recovered five assault rifles, 220 live ammunitions, five vehicles, three motorcycles and the sum of N100,000 including large quantities of drugs and syringes.
Idris pointed out that the gunmen also attempted to attack Goron Dutse Prison yard, but were however, stopped by policemen on duty, who engaged them in a gun duel.
The police commissioner however assured residents that the situation was under control, adding that police was on the look out to apprehend those with gunshot wounds as well as other unexploded IEDs.
While thanking residents for the cooperation given to the command, Idris said the command would continue to ensure that the protection of lives and property is guaranteed at all times, while also urging the people to volunteer information on suspicious persons within their communities.
