The Ekiti State police command has arrested a man identified as Sunday, for allegedly molesting a 13-year old girl to death in Ekiti community on Monday.
The 34-year old suspect, who is from Cross River State, was alleged to have tricked the girl, whose parents are of Urhobo extraction and co-labourers with the suspect into a cocoa plantation and raped her to death.
The suspect is presently being detained at the Police headquarters in Ado Ekiti, while the body of the girl had been deposited at the morgue of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH).
A reliable source in Eyio Ekiti in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government, where the crime was committed, said both Sunday and the parents of the girl were labourers with a farmer, who owns a big plantation in the community.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Victor Babayemi, confirmed that the suspect was being detained at the Criminal Investigations Department in the Command headquarters in Ado Ekiti.
The source added that the town searched for the girl for three days before her decomposing body was found in a remote side of a cocoa plantation.
The source added that while the suspect was to be in charge of cocoa plantation, the victim’s parents were in charge of palm tree plantation, making the two families to be co-workers.
He said the two of them went to the farm on the said day, when Sunday allegedly tricked the girl to a far side of the cocoa plantation and forcefully had the carnal knowledge of the young girl.
The source, said the girl must have died due to excessive bleeding, adding that Sunday must have covered the victim’s mouth with a wrapper, thereby suffocating her to death.
The source said, “When the parents of the girl could not find their child till 8pm on Monday, the second day, the Eyio-in-Council held a meeting and insisted that the girl must be found. So, members of the O’odua Peoples Congress (OPC) were mobilised into the bush and combed everywhere.
But when they could not find her, they later contacted the police. The Police now joined the search party. When they got to a portion in
the farm, the police perceived odour and traced the spot and found her lifeless body with thick blood from her private part.
He said Sunday was immediately arrested by the OPC being the only person in the farm that day and upon interrogation, he was said to have confessed to having committing the crime.
