A suspected sex worker in the Federal Capital Territory chose a very unconventional method of protesting her arrest.
The woman was apprehended during a raid carried out in some popular red light districts of Abuja by a joint task force set up for that purpose.
In a bid to protest her innocence, the suspected prostitute took off her clothes while insisting that she knew nothing about the allegations levelled against her.
According to the Leadership reports, there was a mild drama at the Garki, Area 10, office of the (FCT) Social Development Secretariat (SDS) Friday night, when a suspected commercial sex worker who was picked during a raid of some red light zones in the city went naked to protest her arrest.
The raid, which was carried out by a joint task force comprising officials of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), FCT SDS, Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and other mandate secretariats, is sequel to an order by the FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed to mandate secretaries with direct bearings on the day-to-day running of the city to sanitise the city or get sacked.
The young lady, one of the over 30 suspected commercial sex workers arrested during the raid, whose identity could not be ascertained at the time of this report, faulted her arrest, insisting that she was innocent of the allegation of prostituting being levelled against her.
“I want the whole world to see. Am I a prostitute? I want everybody to see how the government is treating innocent people,” she shouted repeatedly.
In her remarks, the secretary of SDS, Mrs Blessing Onuh, said the administration would not relent until it rids the streets of Abuja of all forms of nuisance, including prostitution.
On his part, the coordinator of the AMMC, Arch. Reuben Okoya, said the council would take drastic actions against hotels owners who condone and harbour prostitutes in their premises just as residents who convert their houses to havens for commercial sex workers would be met with severe sanctions, including sealing such premises, fine or both.
