A bread vendor identified as Yinka has stabbed one 28-year-old man, Ajayi Peters, to death after a disagreement over N50 loaf of bread. The incident happened in Yaba area of Lagos State. Trouble was said to have started when Peters tried to prevail on Yinka who refused to sell a loaf to one of his customers on credit. This led to an argument between both men and in the ensuing scuffle, Yinka went for a knife with which he stabbed the deceased in the head.
Peter was rushed to a private hospital where he later died. The tragedy occurred at a roundabout on Church Street at Makoko resulted to serious tension in the area.
A resident, who wished not to be name said the fight began around 11pm on Tuesday after an argument over N50 loaf of bread. He said, “The incident happened on Tuesday, June 16, around 11pm. The man that died was collecting fees from traders. He and Yinka had been having issues because Peters and some members of his group sometimes threw away his goods whenever they had problems with him. “But on that day, a man had approached him to buy N50 loaf of bread on credit. The bread seller started shouting at the customer that he should not come near his bread because he was not ready to sell on credit.“At a point, Yinka said, ‘No powerful man on this street can take the loaf from me and give you.’” It was learnt that Peters who felt insulted by the suspect outburst, demanded that the suspect give the customer the loaf of bread. This resulted to insults and fight. On seeing the damage done, Yinka was said to have fled the scene of the incident while Peters walked to a private hospital on the street where his wound was stitched by a doctor. However, he was said to have later gave up the ghost as a result of the injury. The bread vendor was arrested by police operatives from Adekunle division after he was tricked by some residents of the area to come for a truce meeting, not knowing that the deceased had died. The corpse of the deceased was deposited in a mortuary.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident. He disclosed that the case has been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation for further investigation.
