Three suspected human traffickers have been arrested by the Lagos state Police Command for attempting to take two stolen new-born babies out of the country.
It was learnt that the babies still had their umbilical cords when the suspects, identified as Hillary Wafo, 43, Kadijatu Dialo Diawara, 39 and Yakari Dialo Diawara, 41 were arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos.
Two of the suspects, Kadijatu and Yakari said to be married to two brothers, were travelling to Mali, when they were apprehended at the international wing of the airport with two babies suspected to be from different mothers.
Meanwhile, the other suspect, Wafo, a Cameroonian, who resides at Bariga, Lagos, was said to be at the airport to assist the suspects to board the plane.
The suspects claimed they were from Okitikpupa in Ondo State where one of them, Kadijatu, who said she had been married for 20 years, claimed she gave birth to the babies.
We gathered that police officers, who were on duty, sensed foul play as the suspects were waiting to board ASKY Airline to Mali and refused to Bosom feed the babies who were weeping profusely.
This however prompted suspicion and policemen at the airport swung into action only to realise that the babies still had their umbilical cords intact and arrested the suspects.
Following their arrest, health officials from Ports Authority examined the suspects and discovered that they were not their biological mothers.
Investigations also revealed that the babies are not twins. After interrogation, the suspects were taken for medical examination which proved that they were not the mothers of the babies.
Police sources revealed Kadijatu had been married for 20 years without a child and had come to Nigeria on November 14, 2015 to pick the babies.
Meanwhile, the suspects’ colleague, Yakari, denied having knowledge of the transaction.
Yakari said,
Quote
“I don’t know anything. I was kept in a room while my sister-in-law was in another room. I don’t know what happened. I only saw the newborn babies after she delivered. Our husbands live in Bamako, Mali.”

It was gathered that the Airport Police Command later informed officials of Lagos State Ministry of Youths Development to ensure that the babies were properly taken care of.
The babies were, however, kept in police custody before they were taken to Juvenile Centre, Alakara, Lagos, to ensure they were given adequate care.
At press time, detectives were reportedly carrying out investigations in order to arrest all those involved.
