In a bombshell announcement, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed damning allegations against a significant number of former governors, with accusations ranging from misappropriation to embezzlement, totaling a staggering N2.2 trillion over a span of 25 years.
This jaw-dropping figure, according to EFCC sources, does not even include properties seized worldwide or those currently under investigation, which collectively amount to billions of Naira.
To put this into perspective, the looted sum of N2.2 trillion mirrors the combined budgets of Lagos State and the South-East states for 2024, exceeding even the budgets of the North-Central and North-East states by several billion Naira.
The EFCC's investigation, probing, and prosecution efforts have targeted 58 ex-governors from various regions of Nigeria, out of the 170 governors who have served since the restoration of civilian government in 1999.
Among the prominent figures named in the ongoing or concluded investigations are late Abubakar Audu with N10.966 billion allegedly misappropriated, TA Orji and sons accused of N551 billion, Yahaya Bello linked to N80.2 billion, and Ayo Fayose embroiled in allegations totaling N6.9 billion, among others.
These revelations have sent shockwaves through the political landscape, prompting calls for accountability and transparency in governance. As the EFCC continues its relentless pursuit of justice, the nation awaits further developments in this high-profile probe.
