Detectives attached to the Zonal Intervention Squad (ZIS), Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos State have arrested six suspects in connection with highway robbery, Parading the suspects, Zone 2 Police spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos identified them as - Ogbona Eze, Oliva Mba, Joseph Ayo, Emmanuel Nwosu, Ahmed Ramani, and John Joseph.  The six suspects allegedly attacked a Serena bus loaded with garri on Ijebu-Ode, Ibadan Road.
Badmos said: “The suspects were arrested after the police received a distressed call, that some robbers were robbing a blue Serena bus. Our policemen raced to the scene and were able to arrest the six men. The Serena bus was also recovered from them. Other items recovered from them are machetes and a dummy gun. They used the toy gun in threatening people before collecting their valuables.”
One of the suspects, Eze, 29, said: “This is the first time we would attempt to rob anyone. I used to sell air freshener on the road, but after Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajumobi, came to power, those of us hawking on the highway were ordered to desist or get arrested. I was left with nothing. I had to find a means of providing for my family.”
Recalling how he was arrested, the father of two, said: “We were arrested during the operation. The bus we robbed was loaded with garri. We didn’t know the owner of the bus is a policeman, working with the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The driver called the owner and that was how we were arrested. We used machetes during the operation.”
Another suspect, Nwoso, 28, recounting his own story, said: “I’m guilty, but this is my first time. Since I was born, I had never thought of stealing. I will not tell lies to you; I was fed up with everything and totally frustrated. I have many people depending on me. If you take me to Ibadan right now, you’ll see people struggling, asking me to give them food and money. I would have gone into farming, but I had no land.”
“Right now, if I see a portion of land given to me, I would go into farming. The people in my gang are Oliva, Emmanuel, and Ahmed, who I know as Alfa. There’s also Joseph, John, and Ogbona. I have a mother, but I’m like someone that does not have anybody. My mother is poor. I’m not blaming her for anything because, she tried her best. I’m not the only child. We are three children. My father is late. Everyone abandoned us after my father died. My father’s family chased my mother away.”
Ayo, 28, who repairs generators, said that Eze told him about a business. He said: “Eze said that he needed my help. I didn’t know that it was stealing. I would not have gone into crime, if not that my shop was burgled. My customers’ generators were stolen, I had to pay them. This got me into debt. I did not participate in the operation; I was told to stay somewhere. I watched them because I had never done that sort of thing before. Later, I saw them flagged down the Serena bus.”
