A major bonus row has erupted in the Nairobi camp of the Super Eagles, as Europe-based players have refused to travel to Kampala until the winning bonus of the Kenya game has been paid.
The entire team were supposed to leave on Thursday morning, but only 12 players, all home-based; Kelechi Osunwa and Mutiu Adegoke, based in Africa, joined the bus to the airport at 9am local time.
Coach Berti Vogts and his assistants also took the side of the players and stayed put.
The players said they expected to be paid winning bonuses for the 1–0 win against Kenya on Sunday, but an NFA board member, Abubakar Ladan, who arrived on Monday said, government had directed that there would be no money for friendly matches and that such matches would have to generate their own income, which was why the NFA wanted to play against Tanzania.
"We wanted to play Tanzania because they offered us money, but the coach wanted to camp in Kenya and play their national team and Amos Adamu used his personal contact to get the friendly match with Kenya, even though the Kenyans told us they could not afford to pay any money," Ladan said.
"They said we could share the gate takings from the match but unfortunately, the crowd was not much and by the time the expenses were sorted out, there was nothing left for us."
Ladan also admitted that the players have a case.
"We made a mistake, we did not agree with them ahead of time the conditions for the match, but two of us here, Ogunjobi and I, cannot take the decision alone; we must speak to the rest of the board and right now, Taiwo is speaking with the chairman. In any case, we do not have the money here, but the players insist they want it. We only came here with money for the Uganda match, so we cannot pay them, but they are being unreasonable."
Taiwo Ogunjobi arrived Nairobi on Wednesday night in a desperate bid to resolve the issue and tried to negotiate with the players to no avail and he finally lost his temper on yesterday morning and declared that the Flying Eagles would be flown in from Nigeria if the Super Eagles players refuse to travel for the match.
That statement further infuriated the players, who were on the verge of reversing their decision.
Emeka Ezeala, Technical Assistant to Berti Vogts, slammed the reasoning behind wanting to fly in players from Nigeria.
"Which is cheaper? Flying in at least 10 players from Nigeria, who would arrive on the eve of the match and might not be fit to play or paying those we already have on the team?"
Ladan again said that the players should not embarrass themselves over three $3000. "I know they are doing this for the sake of the younger players because you know the like of Kanu, Aiyegbeni and Yobo cannot embarrass themselves because of $3,000, but they should consider the FA and do the right thing by playing the match.
