The protracted academic staff strike in the universities in the South-east assumed a national dimension at the weekend with the resolution by other unions within the university system to embark on a sympathy nationwide industrial action, beginning today.

Led by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), its President, Promise Adewusi, explained at a news briefing after a meeting of the association at the University of Abuja that the warning strike would last for one week at first instance but would continue if the crises in some of eastern and southern states universities were not addressed.

Governments of states in the South-east and South-west zones have refused to implement agreement signed on the development of the university system in 2009 resulting in a strike by State Universities in the zones for several months now. There is no end in sight to the crises as various interventions by interested parties had not yielded any positive result.

Interestingly, the association disclosed that all northern states governments, which receive far less than their counterparts in the South had since implemented the agreement but would also participate in the declared action.
Other unions that are involved in the latest strike, according to the SSANU President, are: The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

The SSANU, it was learnt, had commenced mobilisation for the action by writing to its branches in all universities to ensure that all staff comply with the strike. The letter addressed to all branch chairmen, with reference number SSANU/NS/NEC/15/12 and dated 22 October, 2010 was titled: ‘One week warning strike’ read:

“The National Executive Council of our great union at its emergency meeting held today the 22 October, 2010 at the National Secretariat, Gwagwalada, Abuja, reviewed and considered the 21-day ultimatum given to State Governments owing universities to reach agreements to implement the 2009 agreement reached with a view to repositioning the Nigerian university system. SSANU noted that no concrete steps have been taken to resolve the crisis in the State Universities concerned, even when the ultimatum had long expired.

“NEC, therefore, directs its branches all over the nation to proceed on a one-week sympathy strike with affect from Monday 25 October, 2010 in solidarity with our branches in the affected State Universities. We count on your usual support and co-operation.”
