Amid speculations that some political parties in Ogun State are fielding non-Yewa-Awori governorship candidates, community elders from the Yewa-Awori have vowed that they would not support such a move.

This was the consensus of the elders led by Chief Jimoh Olateju during the presentation of gubernatorial aspirant, General Adetunji Olurin to the Council of Traditional rulers in Ilaro last Friday.

“We are working for the progress and development of Yewa-Awori and we will not support anyone or group who did not support our cause that the next governor of our dear state should come from our zone,” Olateju said.

The development came just as elders in the Ogun West Senatorial District have moved to reconcile gubernatorial aspirants within the zone following the selection of the former Group Managing Director of the Gateway Holdings, Mr. Gboyega Nasir Isiaka (GNI) as the consensus candidate of the zone. The selection of Isiaka from Imeko/Afon Local Government has brought disunity among the gubernatorial aspirants with some of them insisting that despite the selection of the consensus candidate, they are still in the race.

Addressing the press last Friday after a meeting at the official residence of the Deputy Governor, Alhaja Salmat Badru, the leader of the committee Senator Ayo Otegbeola said efforts are in top gear to reconcile all aspirants from the zone. His words: “We can’t afford in this race to lose the support of anyone of these aspirants. Since this morning we have been clamouring, planning and deciding how best to reconcile everybody and let them see reasons that only one person can be governor.

Otegbola who also spoke about the emergence of General Adetunji Olurin assured members of the Apex Committee that he (Olurin) would step down very soon. “What we are doing is that when it is time for the party to go for the primaries, we will have only one candidate from our zone because I am assure others would see reasons why they have to step down for the consensus candidate.”

Apparently referring to Olurin, the Senator said: “The other candidate would have seen reasons and be patriotic enough not to disorganize this seemingly successful body (Apex Committee) in a way that we will have multiple candidates. We will appeal to him at the appropriate time and I am sure he will see reaons,” he stated in the presence of top leaders of the zone that included Senator Iyabo Anisulowo and Iyabo Apampa.
Meanwhile, Olurin has said that he was more determined to emerge the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and eventually win the governorship race in the forthcoming election.

The former Military Administrator of the old Oyo State and immediate past sole Administrator of Ekiti State, Olurin said he accepted to contest the election because he did not want the zone to lose the chance once again.
