The weekend’s international programme saw Ryan Giggs bring his long international career to an end, but unfortunately couldn’t ensure he went out with a win.

The former Welsh captain, who now hands the armband to Craig Bellamy, showed what his country will miss against the Czech Republic.

Giggs retired from international football following the 0-0 draw and he came close to signing off with a trademark goal. Glancing past four defenders his shot was well saved by Chelsea’s Petr Cech. He later left the pitch to a standing ovation towards the end of the game as John Toshack substituted him.

"Obviously it's been emotional this week, saying goodbye to everyone," Giggs said after the game. "I've enjoyed it, it's been great and I wish the lads all the best in the future. It was a shame I couldn't have gone off with a win but the fans have been great from day one right to the end."

Elsewhere United fans got a glimpse of what is to follow next season as Nani helped Portugal to three points against Belgium.

Cutting inside from the left before hitting a powerful low drive that crept in off the inside of the right post, Nani celebrated with a trademark back flip. Although Belgium equalised, Hélder Postiga was able to score the winner. "It was a fine goal and a special win," he told uefa.com. "I'm very happy with my work and I hope to continue like this."

Injury ruled out Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Ji-Sung Park, Owen Hargreaves, Cristiano Ronaldo, Louis Saha and Edwin van der Sar from representing their countries, but Nemanja Vidic and Gaby Heinze both played.
